Getting Started

I am now going to get to work planning the 2nd Annual Brainerd Lakes Area Buddy Walk. I am very excited, and also a little nervous, because I am not sure how this year will turn out. We (I) have several goals and kind of high expectations for the walk this year, and I hope I don't let anyone (including myself) down.

BLA Buddy Walk

The Brainerd Lakes Area Buddy Walk was started in 2008 by local families who have children with Down syndrome. The first walk was held on Saturday November 8, 2008. There were 100 walkers and $5,600 was raised. The money that was collected goes to the families in the Brainerd Lakes Area to help them do fun things, go to workshops, and field trips.

The 2nd Annual BLA Buddy Walk will be held on Sunday October 4, 2009. Our goal this year is for 150 walkers and $7,500 to be raised. Our hope is to start a community support group that meets and utilizes the funds collected.

Other GOALS

**Local Bookstore sponsoring a DS Awareness night - Paint The Octopus Red art project, and other books about Down syndrome
**Cans For DS - collect aluminum cans to recycle; money goes to the BLA Down syndrome fund (just as the donations from the Buddy Walk do)
**Dimes For DS - take cans/jars to schools and collect dimes (or any change) for a week; money goes to BLA DS Fund; put cans at local businesses
**Support for families whose child needs surgery - family dinner, special prayer chain, special toy for child
**Activity Center/Room at local church once a month or so - have toys, books, games for kids with DS and their siblings; maybe involve PT, OT, or ECSE teachers
